Brief Biography Birth and Childhood
Hazrat Hassan (RA) was born in Madina Munawwara during the holy month of Ramadan in 3 Hijri. His grandfather, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, personally named him 'Hassan' and loved him unconditionally. In both physical appearance and character, Hazrat Hassan (RA) closely resembled the Holy Prophet ﷺ. During his childhood, the Prophet ﷺ prophesied about him, saying: "This son of mine is a Sayyid (leader), and I hope that through him, Allah will bring peace between two large factions of Muslims."
Period of Caliphate
Following the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali (RA) in Ramadan 40 Hijri, the people of Kufa pledged allegiance (Bai'at) to Hazrat Hassan (RA) as the Caliph. His caliphate lasted for approximately 6 months. During this period, the risk of civil discord and conflict among Muslims was rising drastically. He realized that continuing the war against Hazrat Muawiyah (RA) would cost thousands of innocent Muslim lives.
The Great Sacrifice and Peace Treaty
Fulfilling the prophecy of his grandfather, Hazrat Hassan (RA) made a historic decision in Rabi-ul-Awwal 41 Hijri. For the collective good, unity, and peace of the Ummah, he stepped down from the Caliphate and concluded a peace treaty with Hazrat Muawiyah (RA). This monumental year is recorded in Islamic history as "Aam-ul-Jama'at" (The Year of Unity).
Death
Following the peace treaty, he returned to Madina Munawwara, where he spent the remainder of his life dedicated to worship and immense charity. In 50 Hijri, he was poisoned, leading to his martyrdom. In accordance with his final wishes, he was laid to rest in the sacred cemetery of Jannat al-Baqi in Madina.
